Geocache Description:

This is cache number forty six that has been hidden by caughtatwork at co-ordinates S37 49.928, E145 00.093

Located near McConchie Reserve, Burnley, major features of the new park include a bund wall to contain silt at the base of the quarry, tidal wetlands within the bund wall area and revegetation. There is also a playground for the kids on they way in /out, seating and the park is joined to the main Yarra cycle trail.

The walk down to the area which contains the cache is marked as "Steep Descent" which is why the terrain is rated as such. It is a simple walk down, but unsuitable for wheelchairs. Small children may also need to have their hands held, but walking down the packed dirt steps should pose no problems.

Once you get to the bottom, you are in Burnley Harbour which marks the southernmost extent of the basalt flow which covers the majority of the City of Yarra. Basalt was quarried here until the 1920's. View the sheer rock of the quarry walls from above, in McConchie Reserve.

The river's original course meandered around the promontory which is now Herring Island. In the 1930's a new river channel was cut as part of flood prevention works. The new channel cut through the quarry and flooded it, creating the "harbour", and isolating the island. The flooded quarry has become a tidal wetland area, providing some habitat for native wildlife.

The cache is a medium sized lock-n-lock style container around 700ml in volume. It has been disguised somewhat to match the surroundings.

Please rehide the cache container such that it cannot be viewed by casual passers-by.

I hope you find the general location and some of the history interesting.
