The original Eastlink geocache!
This cache has lasted over 5 years, since the Eastlink tollway (then known as the Mitcham-Frankston Freeway) was announced. It was initially placed where the eastern tunnel entrance now stands, but was moved in 2005 to its current position. It is not part of the Great Eastlink Geocache Project, but is very close to the tollway and was originally inspired by it, before construction commenced. The cache now lies only a few steps off the Eastlink trail, a commuter grade bike and walking track which runs from the city to Dandenong via the Eastern Freeway and Eastlink. A map is included in the cache. Please feel free to consult it but leave it in the cache. In July 2008, the original container and most of the contents were replaced, and the third logbook commenced. Original text is below. --- This cache will in a few years be passed by thousands of cars and trucks every day, on the new freeway. It is the subject of much controversy as the State Government has decreed that the new road will be tolled and is currently calling for tenders from private companies to build it. Nearby you'll see several "No Tolls" signs put up by the council. In the meantime, the existing road now runs over a big new bridge, built to accommodate the freeway underneath, and for the moment you can park on the old road, which now carries no traffic, to find this cache. There are also several other access points around.
