Geocache Description:

This is an EarthCache and has special requirements for logging it.  You cannot log a Found It without responding to the logging requirements set out below.

Only one find claim per Message. Each Geocacher claiming a find must submit an individual response. One team can not lodge a response on behalf of a group of people.

This earth cache is located in Centenary Park, Crows Nest. The earth cache itself should not be a difficult one to complete: it is meant to draw your attention to the way on which well-known natural geological resources - in this case, rock based - play an important role in this country's cultural life.

The most common types of rock used for carving, sculptures or monuments are:

Granite - very hard rock which may be various shades of browns, reds, or greens, and grey, black, or blue-grey.

Granite is an Igneous rock type (formed through the cooling and solidification of magma or lava).

Limestone - a soft rock which may be grey, buff, or variegated grey/buff in colour.

Sandstone - a medium to hard rock whose colours may include buff, reddish brown, or grey colours.

Both Limestone and Sandstone are Sedimentary Rock (formed through the deposition and solidification of sediment).

Marble - a medium to hard rock of colours white, greys, greens, reds, black, or variegated.

Soapstone - a very soft rock in colours of grey, green, or black.

Alabaster - a very soft rock with a wide range of colours: white, greys, beige, orange, yellows, reds, white translucent, variegate.

Marble, Soapstone and Alabaster are examples of Metamorphic Rock (rock which has been changed by extreme heat and pressure).

The monument was built shortly after the Great War.  In recent years the whole monument had been painted white, but the local RSL Sub-Branch, with grant money assistance, undertook a comlete restoration of the monument in 2015 restoring it to its former beauty.

The statue at the top is sculpted from material sourced in Italy

The centre section containing the names boards is sourced from Helidon, just down the range.

The base for the total structure comes from the Crows Nest Quarry.

To log a find on this earth cache, you are asked to name the three rock types in the order given above (top, centre and base), and to describe the colours you see in each. (Ignore the panels displaying the names.)

Now, take of photo of yourself OR your GPS to show a view of GZ, preferable in front of the statue.  Include it in your message, but please do not post it in your log, it might give too much away.

When you have your response to the above questions, please, if possible, MESSAGE us, using the link at the top of the page underneath the name of the Cache. We prefer the MESSAGE method, as apparently, we don't respond to emails very well, but messages we do. We will contact you by MESSAGE once your MESSAGE has been received. But you can log your find in the meantime, and just say that you have MESSAGED your answers to the COs.

Happy Earthcaching!
