This cache is placed on the Atene Skyline Track with a fantastic view of Puketapu hill. Many hundreds of years ago the hill stood at the end of a long, narrow-necked peninsula. The river once flowed in an almost complete circle around Puketapu but after years of erosion the river broke through the neck, forcing a more direct route to the sea and cutting off the meander.
The view is worth the climb! It will take about two hours to walk from you car to the cache and back the same way. If you're feeling adventurous and you're well equipped for a longer walk, then complete the whole track which is a 6-8 hour walk covering 16km.
Getting there
