The Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806 was a major event that
shaped not only the boundaries but the very future of the United
States. On February 28, 1803, Congress approved President Thomas
Jefferson's visionary project, the Corps of Discovery. Over the
next four years, the Corps of Discovery would travel thousands of
miles, experiencing lands, rivers, and peoples that were unknown to
all but Indians.
The
Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail is approximately 3,700
miles long. It traces the route of Lewis & Clark, which began
near St. Louis, IL and traveled as far as what is now modern day
Astoria, OR. The trail passes through portions of Missouri, Kansas,
Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Idaho, Oregon,
and Washington.
Their goals: Map and explore the newly acquired Louisiana
Purchase, make friends with natives, open the West to trade, and
find the Northwest Passage (a water route to the Pacific
Ocean).
Your goals:
0) Commemorate the 200th Anniversary of the journey and
re-kindle its spirit of discovery
1) Attach a photo of a Lewis & Clark Interpretive Sign which
includes your GPSr
2) Provide the Coordinates of the sign in your log
3) Give a little history lesson about the location from the

These must be real 'Interpretive Signs' or as we called them
growing up, Hysterical Markers - not just sign posts along the side
of the road. Normal Locationless Rules Apply. One credit per cacher
