Captain Watkin Tench (1758 – 1833), a Royal marine officer, lead a party west of Parramatta to the foothills of the Blue Mountains in 1789. They came across a river described as being “as broad as the Thames at Putney and apparently of great depth, slow running current in a northerly direction”.
Tench and his party were the first Europeans to set eyes on what is now the Nepean River.
