The Unanderra - Moss Vale railway line is a cross country line. It branches from the Illawarra (South Coast at Unanderra) and winds west up the Illawarra escarpment to join the Main Southern Line at Moss Vale.
The Line is one of the most scenic in New South Wales, and for the first 20 klm after leaving Unanderra has an almost continuous grade of 1 in 30 providing spectacular views over the Illawarra coastline.
The line was first proposed in 1880's by the residents of Moss Vale and local industry keen for connections to the port of Port Kembla.
Construction began on26-6-1925 and opened on 20-8-1932.
The line initially carried mainly limestone from the Marulan Quarry's to Port Kembla Steelworks, but later vegetables from Robertson to Sydney and later coal.
Passenger service began in August 1932 with CPH railmotors and in 1938 these were replaced by 30 class steam locomotives.
3801ltd. commenced "The Cockatoo Run" heritage tourist train on 19-8-1995. From March 2001 "The Cockatoo Run merged with another of the 3801Ltd operators. It currently operates on selected days with a heritage diesel locomotive.
Limestone, coal and grain travel this track taking goods from inland NSW to Port Kembla.
The cache is Log only ====so bring your own pen.
