Geocache Description:

12-12-12

It's the End of the World Multi-Event,
Dunedin, New Zealand

This event, being held in Dunedin, New Zealand, has been put together as part of a Worldwide Multi-Event on the 12th of December 2012, celebrating the date 12/12/12. Apparently it also happens to be the 12th month of the 12th year of Geocaching! It's another 88 years before we can do this again.

A social gathering of fellow geocachers for some food, drink, cache talk and good company!!

Where: Ironic Cafe and Bar, 8 Anzac Avenue, Dunedin (Opposite the Railway Station)

When: 12 December 2012, Time From 6:00 pm.

Theme: Bring or wear something related to the number of 12. What you do is entirely up to you. There will even be a prize for the most creative attendee.

Special: This will be a Multi-Event held on the same day as other 12-12-12 events around the world including two others in New Zealand. We will have available a special Dunedin geocoin to commemorate the event. This is a collectable, but fully trackable geocoin designed for all of the events making up the multi-event all around the world, with each individual event, Dunedin included, having it's own unique coin colour scheme - although we are sharing ours with Invercargill and Wellington.

This event will be mainly a social gathering, but there will be quite a few spot prizes to give out.

Please log a "Will Attend" so we can get a rough idea of numbers and we can let the venue know how many to expect.

What's all this stuff about the End of the World?:

The Mayan calendar is based (not surprisingly) on the Mayan system of counting. They used several different cycles, such as a 260 day "short count" cycle, and a longer 5,125 year "long count" cycle. The date 21-12-12 is considered to correspond to to the end of a 5,125 year long count cycle. Some have chosen to interpret the end of the long count as the end of the Mayan calendar and hence a prediction of the end of the world, whereas it is really just the end of one calendar period. Similar in concept to the way we track Centuries or Millennia.

MultiEvent Geocoin

This is a 12 sided copper geocoin with a 2 inch diameter (larger than usual). MultiEvent Geocoins share a common design for all events worldwide, but each event has its own unique colour scheme. In this case, Wellington, Dunedin and Invercargill are sharing a colour scheme. On the front, the coin features a Mayan design with a stylised Sun design. The reverse features modern and Mayan design elements, including luminous digits on the clock. Coins are available for $20 each. This coin is only available to event attendees before the event - place your order here!
Prizes
Thanks to funkymunkeyzone we will have one of the Auckland coins as a spot prize. This is the same design but different colour scheme to the Dunedin. Thanks also to cumbyrocks who has once again donated an It's Not About The Numbers geocoin as a spot prize. Thanks to the local Bivouac Outdoor store who have donated some stock as spot prizes to use as swag or to keep.
