Geocache Description:

N is for Nevis - this cache is located near the start of the road into the Nevis Valley.

The early Maori used the Nevis Valley both as an trail route and for moa hunting. In the 19th century it was settled first by farmers then by the miners. The road up to Duffers Saddle (the highest maintained road in New Zealand at 1300m) provides many lovely views of the Upper Clutha Valley, the Pisa, Dunstan, St Bathans Ranges. On a clear day you can even see the Southern Alps and Mt Cook.

At the beginning of the road to the Nevis (where you turn off the main road) you can see the Carrick Station Woolshed, which was made from large pieces of schist rock that had been attached to the back of wagons on the journey down the hill (to act as a brake on the steep descent).

The Lower Nevis can be reached in an ordinary car, but if you wish to venture into the Upper Nevis or through to Garston then a 4WD will be required. The Nevis Valley still contains some of the best examples of early mining techniques in Otago and makes for a wonderful excursion.

This cache is part of my A to Z of the Cromwell Area. At each
cache in the alphabet there will be a special code: note this down
and the letter it corrosponds to - there will be caches in the
future that use these codes. Happy hunting.
