JIMP59’s CAVE (Special thanks to my son Cjpinaula for assisting me on this cache)
A challenge for those who dare………Do not do this on a rainy day. Total round trip distance is just under 2 miles. allow 2-3 hours.
The hike to this cave will test your strength, stamina and all of your Geocaching skills. Please come prepared with all the necessary boonie stomping equipment to keep you going strong. A machete is a must as well as a 1st aid kit. Wear long pants and gloves. Use good hiking shoes and be prepared to hike in the water. I don’t recommend doing this hike alone and definitely not at night. Be sure to water proof your valuables as falling in the water may occur. It occurred to me 4 times. (Not funny)
To reach the cave, park near the Tocha bridge and follow the short narrow trail to the river. Turn right and continue hiking along the river bank. There are certain points along the way, where you will have to decide to cross the river and walk on the opposite side. The river is pretty low during the dry season so walking in the river is sometimes the best way to go. We walked in the river at least the last 3 to 4 tenths of a mile to the cave. Parts of the river bed were dry and it was like walking on gravel. The water level for most of the hike was about calf high. However, it can get up to waist deep in some areas. Be extra careful when walking in the water as it is extremely rocky and slippery. As long as you follow the river, you will not get lost. Cache is located just outside the cave entrance. Be sure to bring your flashlight to explore the cave. Your GPS signal may jump around due to the jungle cover. However, you can see the cave from the river.
Be prepared for wild pigs, frogs, hermit crabs, land crabs, shrimp, eels, mosquitoes, spiders and everything else that the jungle has to offer. We saw all of them and it was amazing. (well, not the mosquitoes & spiders). You will also come across many many many huge IFIT trees (dead and alive). The most I have ever seen. IFIT is the hardest wood found on Guam and is used for furniture and many other things.
A.H for the FTF….!
Note: Trail markers have been placed on 5-17-2008. The river is almost completely dry which brings the difficulty down to a 2 during this dry season.
Normally this would rate a 3.5 but it may rate higher. Especially right after a heavy downpour and during the rainy season when the water level of the river will be much much higher.
GOOD LUCK AND BE SAFE.
JIMP59's HALL OF FAME: Congratulations to the following FTF cachers who took on Jimp59's challenge.
