Landels Park Trail Entrance is the gateway to the vibrant Mountain View downtown from the Stevens Creek Trail. It bridges the park and the trail. Both provide great recreational spaces for hiking, biking, walking dogs, etc.
Landels Park is adjacent to Edith Landels Elementary School. It has a basketball court, athletic field, outdoor volleyball court, and playgrounds for children. Both park and school are named for Miss Edith Landels. I was curious about their namesake Miss Edith Landels and did some research online. The following are excerpts from the neighborhood newsletter. (Old Mountain View Neighborhood Association graciously gave permission for the reprint of part of its March 2000 article “History Corner: Dana Street School”)
“Dana Street School was the precursor of Edith Landels School. It was originally located on Dana Street between Oak Street and Shoreline Boulevard, the site of the current fire station. Miss Edith Landels began teaching kindergarten classes in a store front at 275 Castro Street in 1916.
In August of 1916, a bond measure passed that allocated $9,000 for the construction and equipping of Dana Street School, the second elementary school in Mountain View. The single story stucco school opened in June of 1917, its five rooms for kindergarten, first and second grades, office and teacher's room considered the most modern of school plants. The school was enlarged in 1921 to include third grade.
Miss Landels taught kindergarten in classroom number 2 at the Dana Street School all the years that it existed. In 1955, Dana Street School was condemned because of structural faults. The school continued to be used until 1959, however; there was no place else for the students to go. In 1957, the school trustees decided to name a modern, sleek 18-room replacement school after Miss Landels. Landels Elementary School was completed in 1959 at a cost of $687,000. Miss Landels taught her final kindergarten class at the new Landels School and then retired after 43 years of teaching in Mountain View.”
This is a 3-Stage cache starting from the Landels Park and ending just before the Stevens Creek Trail. Each stage is only a short walk away from the next. They are easily accessible. Use your geosense, riddle sense, and other senses (touch). This description begins with some hints. The final cache is a small but look for a nano at the first stage. Geocoins included for FTF and STF.
Congratulations to FTF Time-for-a-break.
