Hungary was one of the biggest bauxite extracting countries of Europe. Bauxite is the most important ore of aluminum. As the mines got emptied, the extractation ended. The strip mines are now large pits as some kind of amphitheatres.
With the recultivation of these wounds of nature, the mines are now fit into the surroundings. The greatest example of these recultivation works is the mine near Gánt. The huge mine pit is now an open-air geological museum. The capabilities of the strip pit are perfectly utilized. The stones of the hills and the layers of the rock can be seen. There's a guide-path wich leads you around the area and describes (with information panes) the structure of the area and the surrounding mountiains.
We can touch the yellow-red stones which a few years (230 million) ago were the coast of North-Africa. We can find here fossils in the rocks. These are prints of animals from the Eocenic Age sea. Their round, few centimeters small fossils are very likely to find and can be easily noticed on the rock. We can often find thin periwinkles, and sea urchins and if you are lucky enough you can even dig shark teeth from the loose soil of the mines. But be careful, the crumbling walls are very dangerous!
The mine is close to the western border of Gánt. After you walked along the path you can see the whole area from above and if you've done with that go and find the 28x11cm size plastic kitchen-box which is at the foot of a tree.
Enjoy yourself!
