This cache will take you to a piece of hardware that led to the 1939 Nobel Prize in Physics.
These coordinates will place you in front of a plaque commemorating the Lawrence Cyclotron. Just a hundred feet in front of the plaque lies the huge electromagnet from the world's first major cyclotron.
The cyclotron allowed physicists to produce the high energy particles required for atomic disintegration by means of a succession of very small 'pushes.' With the advent of the cyclotron, it was possible, in effect, to smash atoms.
In 1939, E.O. Lawrence (whose name is very prominent on the part of the UC Berkeley campus) won the Nobel Prize for the invention and application of the cyclotron.
To log this cache, email me the answers to the three questions below. (The first two can be obtained by reading the plaque, the third requires walking over to the magnet.)
1. What was the size of the cyclotron?
2. How much did it weigh?
3. What five letter word is displayed in large letters at the top of the magnet?
While at this spot, be sure to visit the Hall of Science and don't miss one of the greatest views of the San Francisco Bay Area.
